U.S. FCC Tests Blackout of Century Link 911 Crisis Call benefit- Update 2

by JE Cool of tech4today.net

The FCC chairman Ajit Pai said on Friday that the FCC is investigating a nationwide Centurylink Inc network outage that has affected service on 911 emergency phone calls across the country.

The CenturyLink benefit blackout is ... totally unsatisfactory, and its broadness and term are especially disturbing, Pai said in an announcement. I've coordinated the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau to quickly dispatch an examination concerning the reason and effect of this blackout.

CNBC said clients from New York to California announced blackouts. It said 911 blackouts were accounted for in parts of Washington state, Missouri, Idaho and Arizona.

The Monroe, Louisiana-based media communications organization did not quickly react to a demand for input on the FCC examination or give data concerning what number of clients were influenced.

"We have made substantial progress in restoring and stabilizing services across the network over the last several hours," CenturyLink spokeswoman Linda Johnson said in a statement. "We remain focused on resolving all remaining issues." Asked about the FCC investigation, a spokeswoman for CenturyLink said the company had been in contact with the federal agency and would cooperate fully.

Pai said he had spoken with CenturyLink "to underscore the urgency of restoring service immediately."
"This inquiry will include an examination of the effect that CenturyLinks outage appears to have had on other providers' 911 services," he said.

The FCC has recently fined transporters for 911 blackouts that it considered preventable. CenturyLink consented to a $16 million settlement after an April 2014 blackout.
