starred in the popular sitcom Ellen From 1994 to 1998 and has hosted her
own award-winning TV talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, since 2003. In 1997, she came out as gay, and became a staunch advocate of LGBT rights. She married her girlfriend Portia de Rossi in 2008.
Her stand-up career started in the early 1980's. In 1986 she appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." As a film actress, she starred in Mr. Wrong (1996), EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter (1999), and presented her voice as Dory in the Pixar animated film Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dowry (2016). She was the first person to win an award the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for a
Voice performance, for Nemo. She appeared on American Idol for its ninth season as a judge in 2010.
DeGenres has hosted the Academy Awards,
Grammy Awards, and the Primetime Emmys. She has authored four books and started her own record company, Eleven eleven. She also started her production company as well named, A Very Good Production. She has won 30 Emmys,20 People's choice Awards (more than any other person), and other numerous awards for her work and charitable efforts. She received the Presidential Medal if Freedom, in 2016.

Early life and Education
DeGenres was born and raised in Metairie, Lousiana, to an insurance salesman and a working mother who divorced when she was a teenager. When she was growing up, Degeneres dreamt if being a veterinarian. But she she gave up on that because she was "not book smart." Instead, she waited tables,sold vacuum cleaners and painted houses.
She has one brother,Vance, who is a musician, an actor/comedian and a former correspondent for The Daily Show, and was considered the most humorous member of the family. Then one day, during a public event, DeGenres used her humor to avoid a bad situation when frightened by the crowd, and became a hit and then she started receiving offers to do stand-up comedy. Then she began performing in 1981, supported by her mother's moral and financial support.
DeGenres graduated from Atlanta High School in May 1976, after completing her first years of high school ar Grace King High School in metairie, Louisiana. She moved back to to New Orleans to attend the University of New Orleans, where she majored in communication Studies.
Personal life
In 1997, DeGeneres came out as lesbian. The disclosure of her sexual orientation sparked intense interest by American tabloids and
news. The disputations of the media coverage shocked DeGeneres professional career and left her depressed. And at first, her mother, Betty DeGeneres was initially shocked about her daughter coming out as a gay, but later she became one of her strongest supporters. Since then she is also an active member of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays and spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign's Coming Out Project as described in Ellen's book "Love."
For few years, DeGeneres dated actress Anne Heche and they bought themselves a home in Los Angeles,in 1999. At a point the couple announced their desire to get married, but they broke up in 2000.
Degeneres then dated Alexandra Hedison for a couple of years before getting involved with actress Portia de Rossi in December 2004. After the overturn of the same-sex marriage ban in California, DeGeneres and de Rossi were engaged,got married in August 2008, at their home in Beverly Hills,California where they live with their four dogs and three cats. It was perhaps the highest-profile gay marriage after California legalized the unions. In 2010 de Rossi was granted permission to legally change her name to Portia Lee James Degeneres.
Stand-up comedy
Degenres started performing stand-up comedy at small clubs and coffee houses. By 1981, she was the emcee at the Clyde's Comedy club in New Orleans. DeGeneres claims Woddy Allen and Steve Martin to be her main influences at that time. She stated to her national tours in the early 80's and in 1984 she was named Showtime's funniest person in America.
It was announced in 2017, that DeGeneres will appear in a Brand new stand up special, Relatable, for Netflix after 15 years of break from stand-up comedy.

Ellen DeGeneres was a big hot with her self-titled talk show,'Elen', with daytime viewers in 2003. Since the beginning of the show, it has won a slew of Daytime Emmy and people's choice Awards.
Ellen DeGeneres became a popular choice to host major award shows with her unique combination of being kind and funny. She was tapped to host the
Grammys in 1996 and 1997; the Primetime Emmys in 2001 and 2005;and the Academy Awards in 2007 and 2014. Degenres was chosen to fill the fourth slot as a judge in American Idol, replacing Paula Abdul.
DeGeneres is also the author of several books, including My Point ... and I Do Have One (1995), Seriously ... I'm Kidding (2011), and Home (2015). Even her film work slowed her talk show off, she carried her work mostly behind the scenes as an executive producer of several television shows including Bethenny (2012-2014), Repeat After Me (2015), One Big Happy(2015), Little Big Shots (2015) and her HGTV reality competition show, Ellens Design Challenge.
Other Projects
DeGeneres continued to build her own empire even after changing many roles in Hollywood. She owns her own record label called "eleveneleven." She also has a lifestyle brand which is called Ed by Ellen. This was launched in 2015 which sells shoes, home and baby items accessories and a pet line. She is an animal rights and gay rights activist. She is also a vegan.
Ellen co-ordinate a vegan outreach website titled 'going Vegan with Ellen'. She also intended to open a vegan tapas bar, Bokado in Los Angeles,but plans fell through.
In January 2018, for Ellen's 60th birthday, Ellen's wife, Portia de Rossi, gifted a permanent gorilla home in Rwanda built in her namesake for the Digit Fund. This gift was part of a new arm of the Digit Fund now called the "Ellen DeGenres Wildlife Fund."
